In 2009 we decided to head back to Central Wyoming to see Independence Rock, Hells Half Acre, ride the Big Horn Mountains, and then spend a few days in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We started off on I74 to I80, and stayed on I80 until about 2/3rd's of the way across Nebraska. At Ogallala we turned onto SR 26 and followed that until it teed into I25 and made our first camp at the Holiday Inn Express in Casper, Wyoming. We used Casper as our home base and made a long ride in the rain down to Independence Rock and Devils Gap (head southwest from Casper on Highway 220). The next day the weather cleared and we made our way over to Hells Half Acre, Thermopolis, The Big Horn Mountains, and back to Casper. The Route was US 20 West from Casper through Thermopolis to Worland, then turned onto Highway 16 over to Buffalo then back south on on I25 to Casper. There are not many gas stations between Buffalo and Casper so be sure to gas up when ever the opportunity presents itself to you. |
